A great study from Oxford University came out last week that discovered something we here at CitySocialising have known for years… that “Facebook might give us the ability to have thousands of friends but it does nothing to expand how many we keep in real life” - this is because as humans we have a max capacity of maintaing 150 real life friendships/relationships – which still sounds like a LOT to me, especially if you’re a busy, working girl or guy.
Apparently, when looking at use of sites like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace, the study found that those with lots of ‘friends’ only interact with a relatively small proportion of them, and that even if people had say 1,500 friends, when you actually look at traffic on sites, they saw that “people maintain the same inner circle of around 150 people that we observe in the real world”
But surely there’s just not enough hours in the day or days in the weeks to socialise one on one and give even each of 150 friends the attention that they need? Or perhaps that’s just me! The great thing about CitySocialising is that, because the Socials that our members, and our Editors, organise on our site are about going out together in groups, this actually IS an easy way to maintain up to 150 friendships at the same time.
So, if like me you’re falling short of 150 real world friends, make sure you get yourself along to some Socials quick smart
